Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- Ten local high schools were placed on the "U.S. News & World Report list of the best high schools in the San Antonio metro area." The top three were BASIS San Antonio's Shavano Campus, SAISD's Young Women Leadership Academy and NISD's Health Careers High School The schools also made top 10 in the state of Texas," and "BASIS ranked in the top 100 in the nation, coming in at No. 77." - Two local students from Jay High School "are representing Texas in a national search for shoe designers hosted by Vans." Both are participating in the "Vans Custom Culture contest" which encourages young artists to "use their creativity: and at the same time, "win a big check for their schools." The two students need "votes to stay in the competition," as on Friday, May 6, the contest will narrow down "to five contestants." The winner of the grand prize will get $50,000 for their school, and four runners-up will receive $15,000 each for their campuses. Votes can be submitted daily here until Friday, May 6. - Two teachers from KIPP Texas-San Antonio school received the Harriet Ball Excellence in Teaching Award during Teacher Appreciation Week. The teachers, Jose Hernandez who teaches AP and IB Spanish at KIPP University Prep, and Martina Ramos who's "an 8th grade reading teacher from KIPP Aspire Academy" received $10,000 checks each. Both were selected "based on their track record of improving student achievement, their leadership in the classroom and throughout their school, and their commitment to equipping students with the skills needed to pursue any path and lead fulfilling lives." - Park at 38THIRTY, "a partnership with Frankling Development and the San Antonio Housing Trust," is a new "100 percent affordable housing development in the Medical Center in District 8." On Monday, May 2, they held their grand opening at their location on 3830 Parkdale St. The new "rental housing complex" has 196 units made up of "all family-sized two- and three-bedroom units available to households at 60 percent AMI with an affordability period lasting 40 years." Amenities include "a children's play-scape areas, pool, community room, gym, library, and business center with WIFI." Also, convenient on-site services include "after-school activities such as STEAM programming, leadership and team building courses, swim lessons, health and wellness programs, a food pantry, and financial literacy courses."
