Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Gabriela Couvillion, your host of the San Antonio Daily.
First, today's weather:
Breezy; a p.m. thunderstorm or two. High: 92 Low: 67.
Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- After 7 years, Trinity University's 19th president, Danny Anderson, is retiring at the end of the spring 2022 semester. He says "while I am enthusiastic about Trinity's bright future, the pandemic has given me the opportunity to re-examine my personal priorities." Before coming to Trinity, he held several positions at The University of Kansas and was dean from 2010-2015. Dr. Anderson, "who has a Ph.D. and M.A. in Spanish from The University of Kansas, serves on various boards of directors and is member of several councils and chambers in San Antonio. He "leaves a strong legacy behind, including overseeing numerous campus expansion and renovations, diversity and inclusion efforts, and an increase of both graduation and retention rates." Congratulations to Dr. Anderson and best of luck to him! (Subscription: San Antonio Business Journal)
- For the sixth year in a row, "the monarch butterfly's migration from Canada to the mountains in Mexico" will be celebrated at the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival in San Antonio. This year it will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Confluence Park, located at 310 W. Mitchell St. Visitors will be able to participate in various activities, including educational activities, kayaking and butterfly tagging. As a sign of hope and healing, the tagged butterflies "will carry the names of people who have died." To tag a butterfly in memory of a loved one, complete a form on Texas Butterfly Ranch's website. (San Antonio Current)
- San Antonio's Armadillo's Burgers Properties LLC recently purchased Contreras Ice House on 1617 W Commerce St. Andrew Carrillo, co-owner of Armadillos Texas Style Burgers, likes the fact that the West Side location was actually an ice house and said "I'd like to keep that and implement it into the current structure after construction." There are currently two Armadillo locations, at 1423 McCullough Ave. and at City Base, but Carrillo is not sure whether the ice house location will carry the same name. Although plans are still underway, he just wanted to secure the property and "keep most of the historic facade and layout" for now. (Laredo Morning Times)
- If you're hungry, consider visiting an open-air food stand. Nine hottest pop-ups where you can find some good food are Dang!wich, Gigi's Deli, Last Place Burgers, Masshole Food Truck, Ooyoo Pan, Pumpers, Pure Heart Foods, Sijang Korean Corn Dogs and Vegan and Sara. Whatever you're in a mood for, you're likely to find it at either of these eateries in town. Visit the following for more details on their menus and bon appétit to you! (culturemap.com)
- As always, The Big Texas Comicon was a big success! Held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center this past weekend, the popular pop culture conference featured "special appearances by 'The Mandalorian's' Giancarlo Esposito, 'Charmed' stars Holly Marie Combs and Brian Krause, voice actress Tara Strong, comic book artist Jim Starlin, and many more." Cosplayers participated in costume contests and there were games, photos and more. If you missed this year's event, hopefully you will get to go next year. If you went and didn't get a chance to take pictures, visit the following to enjoy some great photos of the event! (San Antonio Magazine)
