2 Homeless Men Shot Under South Austin Bridge

Suspect still at large after early Monday shooting leaves two people with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Two homeless men were shot in South Austin early Monday while sleeping under a bridge, according to officials.

Austin-Travis County EMS medics transported the two injured men to St. David's South Austin Medical Center with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries after the shooting was reported at around 3:20 a.m. along the 1500 block of West William Cannon Drive. The site is between Woodhue Drive and Cannonleague Drive.

Covered in blood, the injured men were able to flag down a passerby at the nearby Cannon Place Apartments, prompting that person to call police. The victims — a man in his 30s and another in his 60s — were shot in the upper torso as they rested under the bridge, police said.

Given how dark it is at night in the bridge's underbelly that served as makeshift sleeping quarters for the men, the two victims weren't able to provide a detailed description of the suspect. Police continue to search for the person responsible for the shooting.
