ATX Weekend Events Feature A Free Movie, Beer Yoga, And More

This weekend offers great opportunities to explore Austin with events such as a free day of fitness, art exhibitions, a mercado, and more.

AUSTIN, TX -- The weekend is upon us, and if you're like a lot of us, you've begun making plans to get out and enjoy what Austin has to offer. This weekend's events offer culture, history, fitness, community fun, and more. Check out some of the great activities scheduled in and around Austin this weekend. And the best part? Featured events are FREE or low-cost -- an added incentive for going out, gathering friends and family, and exploring what's going on near you.

FRIDAY, JAN. 12

  • Opening for Zoë Shulman - The Allegory of Good and Bad Government: CAMIBA art hosts the opening reception for Zoë Shulman's The Allegory of Good and Bad Government on Friday, Jan. 12 from 6 PM - 8 PM. This will be Zoë Shulman's second solo exhibition with CAMIBA art Gallery. This series of twenty hexagon shaped artworks are presented as diptychs in a candle-lit gallery.   • Man on Edge - Prints of James Surls: Flatbed Press and Gallery will host the prints of James Surls on Friday, Jan. 12 from 6 PM - 8 PM. With a career spanning over forty years, Surls has been translating his artistic vision into works of sculpture; additionally, Surls uses his artistry to create pieces using steel and wood.   • Sleepless In Seattle - Community Cinema: Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites the community to a free movie night with a screening of Sleepless in Seattle on Friday, Jan. 12 beginning at 6:30 PM. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and a blanket, and invite friends and family to enjoy a fun movie night. Food will be available for purchase at the venue (cash and credit cards accepted).   • Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular: Come out and enjoy what's become a cult classic, the music of Pink Floyd set to a visual choreography of colorful lasers and lighting effects, on Friday, Jan. 12 beginning at 8 PM.   • Craft Yoga at Whitestone Brewery: Join the Whitestone Brewery as they host a one hour yoga class on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 10 AM. January's Frida Friday ATX raffle will benefit Barrio Writers - a creative writing program founded by author Sarah Rafael García, and provides free college level writing workshop to teenagers in underserved communities.   • Hyde Park Storytelling's 3rd Birthday - Right Time, Right Place: Hyde Park Storytelling celebrates its 3rd birthday on Saturday, Jan. 13 from 7 PM - 10 PM. The evening's theme is Right Time, Right Place for inspiring the storyteller, but attendees need not worry about sticking to it.   • Winter Beginner's Walk: Join the Williamson County Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas by walking the loop in the largest public park in Round Rock for an introduction on how to identify native plants in their natural habitat on Sunday, Jan. 14 from 1 PM - 3 PM. We hope to conduct this walk in all four seasons of 2018 to give you practice identifying native plants during their annual growth cycle of winter, spring, summer and fall.   • Legends and Lore of the Texas Capitol: From its beginning as one of the most ambitious construction projects west of the Mississippi, the imposing red granite Lone Star statehouse loomed large in Texas lore. The Texas State Capitol, an iconic landmark, rests on a foundation of election rigging, an unsolved murder, land swaps and pre-dedication blackmail.
