Vehicle burst into flames after wreck along 3600 block of S. Mopac Expressway early Sunday, burning victim beyond recognition.

AUSTIN, TX — Emergency crews extracted a charred body from a car that became engulfed in flames following a crash early Sunday.

Austin-Travis County EMS medics were dispatched to the 3600 block of S. Mopac Expressway (Loop 1) at around 5 a.m. where they found the victim inside a vehicle that had burst into flames after a wreck. The body was burned to the point that officials were unable to determine the deceased victim's gender or approximate age, according to tweeted posts issued by medics.

The stretch of roadway was blocked off to traffic for a prolonged period of time to accommodate emergency workers and a police investigation. Drivers were finding alternative routes at the urging of police, including exiting at Barton Creek and frontage road to continue driving southbound.
