Austin Police Bust Methamphetamine Shipment In Traffic Stop

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Tuesday revealed details on a drug bust that began as a routine traffic stop that yielded some 93 pound of methamphetamine hidden in a vehicle's gas tank and tires.
The incident dates to May 30, but police released details on Tuesday. Officers with the Austin Police Department's Organized Crime Division stopped a 2008 Pontiac SUV in the 14300 block of South Interstate 35 for speeding, according to a press advisory. While speaking with the driver, Reymundo Bustamante, the officers picked up on a number of clues using their training in drug trafficking technique recognition that led them to believe the driver may be smuggling illegal narcotics, police said.
After further investigation, APD K9 “Cuatro” positively alerted on the vehicle leading officers to discover approximately 93 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the SUV’s gas tank and tires, police said. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is more than $1.6 million, according to police.
Bustamante, 22, of Laredo, Texas, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison and a $10,000 fine. The case has been referred to the U.S. Attorney’s office for further review, local police said.
