Austin Police ID Pedestrian Killed Along Congress Avenue
Carlos Cardenas, Jr., 45, was walking mid-block in an unlighted portion of the street when he was hit by a car on Friday.
SOUTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police on Monday identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed in South Austin over the weekend.
Carlos Cardenas, Jr., 45, was traveling northbound along the 7300 block of South Congress Avenue on Friday, March 29, just before 8:20 p.m. when he was struck by a car. The vehicle, a 2001 white Chrysler Sebring, was traveling northbound on Congress as Cardenas and another pedestrian were crossing mid-block in an unlighted portion of the street, according to police.
The driver of the Chrysler remained on scene, and is not expected to face charges.

The incident marked Austin’s 12th fatal traffic crash of 2019, police said, resulting in 12 fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, there were 14 fatal traffic crashes and 15 traffic fatalities, police added.
