Austin Police Officer, 3 Others Hospitalized After DWI Crash

Injured officer Derek Baroody, on the force for less than a year, among the victims along with a juvenile female; drunk driver jailed.

AUSTIN, TX — An Austin police officer is in stable condition after his patrol vehicle was hit by a drunk driver overnight in South Austin on Tuesday, police said.

The incident occurred at around 12:23 a.m. on Tuesday, when officers responded to an intoxication assault at the intersection of East Riverside Drive and Montpolis Drive involving an SUV and an Austin Police Department patrol vehicle, according to police.

Four people, including the officer, who was on duty at the time, and a juvenile female victim, were rushed to area hospitals for medical treatment. All four victims are in stable condition, police said in a press advisory. The police officer who was injured, Derek Baroody, has been with APD for less than a year, police said.

The driver of the SUV, Nickolas Martinez, 27, has been charged with intoxication assault, intoxication assault on a peace officer and DWI child passenger. He is facing a $95,000 bond for all three offenses, police said. Police said a booking photo for Martinez is unavailable, but will be issued to media outlets as soon as it's ready for distribution.
