Austin Traffic Alert: Interstate 35 Lanes Closed This Week For Bridge Construction

Southbound and northbound lanes to close at Oltorf Street throughout the week to accommodate bridge construction.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Texas Department of Transportation crews will close the Interstate 35 main lanes and Oltorf Street bridge for bridge construction this week, officials said.

The closures will alternate between Monday and Wednesday, affecting both the southbound and northbound lanes of I-35 at highway exit 232A. Closures are as follows:

  • 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Monday night, October 23 and Tuesday night, October 24 (northbound).
  • 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Wednesday night, October 25 and Thursday night, October 26(southbound)

Traffic will be detoured to the frontage roads at exit 232A (Oltorf) beginning at 10 p.m., with full main lane closures from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., Monday through Thursday nights, October 23-26, weather permitting. The closure will affect northbound motorists on Monday and Tuesday nights, and southbound motorists Wednesday and Thursday nights, TxDot officials said.

In addition, both directions of Oltorf Street over I-35 will close at 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The I-35 main lanes and Oltorf Street will reopen as work is completed, officials said.

Drivers wishing to cross I-35 at Oltorf Street during the closure will be detoured to Woodward Street and Woodland Avenue. (See detour map below.)

Road signs have been installed to alert drivers of the closure. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes, as delays are expected. TxDOT asks the traveling public to be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.

"The I-35 at Oltorf Street Project will improve mobility, safety, and connectivity for all modes of transportation along and across I-35," TxDot officials said. "Work includes improving entrance/exit ramps and lanes, adding U-turn lanes at the Oltorf Street bridge, and bicycle and pedestrian enhancements."
