Deaths Of Two Men, Father And Son, In South Austin Home Ruled Murder-Suicide

Investigation revealed Joseph Kollman, 54, fatally shot Jimmy Kollman, 82, before taking his own life inside a shed in the back yard.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — The two men found dead in a home earlier this week died in a case of a murder-suicide after the younger man killed his father before turning the gun on himself, police said on Friday.

Police were dispatched on Wednesday, May 3, to a home at 7609 West Gate Blvd. just before 1 p.m. Once there, offices found Jimmy Kollman, 82, dead in his bed from a single gunshot wound. The man's son, identified as Joseph Kollman, 54, was also found dead on the property, inside a shed in the back yard.

After interviewing family and neighbors, police determined that Joseph Kollman shot and killed his father and then committed suicide. The following day, the Travis County Medical Examiner’s office performed autopsies on both the decedents, ruling the cause of death for Jimmy Kollman was from a gunshot wound. The manner of death was ruled a homicide. The cause of death for Joseph Kollman was also from a gunshot wound, with the manner of death ruled a suicide.

The motive for the deaths is unclear. Police provided no further details.
