Dog Shot By Police Officer In South Austin Dies Of Injuries

The animal is said to have attacked an officer as responding to a call of a dog attacking a child along the 3100 block of Powell Circle.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — A dog that was shot by an Austin police officer while responding to a call in South Austin has died.

The police officer responding to the 3100 block of Powell Circle at about 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday said the dog attacked him, forcing him to shoot, CBS Austin reported. Police had responded to a call about a dog attacking a child when the dog is said to have bitten the officer in the leg.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS officials, three victims — two adult males and one female child — were evaluated at the scene. One of the officers was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while another officer refused treatment. The child was taken to Dell Children's Medical Center with injuries deemed serious but not life-threatening.

Austin Police Department officials said the dog was transported to Animal Control services with a second dog. The dog that was shot later succumbed to its injuries, CBS Austin reported.

Police have released no other details, including the breed of dog involved.
