Downward Trend For Post-Harvey Gas Prices Continues In Austin

In the past week, Austin gas prices have fallen 3.1 cents per gallon for an average of $2.48 per gallon on Monday, GasBuddy.com says.

AUSTIN, TX — The average price of gasoline in the Austin area continues its downward trend this week in the weeks following Hurricane Harvey that saw supply slowdowns lead to higher prices temporarily, according to the fuel price tracker GasBuddy.com.

In the past week, Austin gas prices have fallen 3.1 cents per gallon for an average of $2.48 per gallon on Monday, according to the app's daily survey of 830 gasoline-selling outlets in Austin. Nationally, the average gas price has dropped 5.5 cents per gallon in the same span of time to $2.55 per gallon, GasBuddy reports.

The lowest price in the Austin area was $2.27, according to the survey. The lower prices are welcome news to motorists after Harvey, but the current average is still 54.3 cents per gallon higher than this time a year ago, and 37.4 cents higher than one month ago, according to the app.

Notwithstanding Harvey, it's been a roller coaster in terms of price per gallon of gas in the past five years, according to the data:

  • 2016: $1.94 per gallon.
  • 2015: $2.09 per gallon.
  • 2014: $3.13 per gallon.
  • 2013: $3.24 per gallon.
  • 2012: $3.59 per gallon.
