Driver Killed, 2 Others Hurt In South Austin Traffic Wreck

Male driver in his 30s veered onto oncoming traffic along 500 block of South Pleasant Valley Road during morning traffic rush hour.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — A man was killed and two women were hospitalized following a car wreck in Southeast Austin early Tuesday, medics said.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS officials, the collision occurred along the 500 block of South Pleasant Valley Road just south of Cesar Chavez Street at around 6:30 a.m. In a subsequent press briefing, police said the male driver had crossed onto oncoming northbound traffic on South Pleasant Valley Road, hitting two other vehicles in the process.

Police noted the driver, a man in his 30s, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the impact, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The two women in the other vehicles were rushed to St. David's South Austin Medical Center with injuries deemed to be non-life-threatening, according to medics.

The wreck prompted closure of all lanes of traffic to accommodate emergency crews and a police investigation, from South Lakeshore Boulevard to Canterbury Street north of Lady Bird Lake, according to reports. Drivers were forced to seek alternate routes in the midst of morning rush hour to arrive at their destinations.

It's unclear what may have caused the crash. Patch will update if more details are made known.
