Early Morning Shooting Leaves One Dead, Another Injured In South Austin [Video]

Police are unsure what led up to the gun play, but believe a car crash preceded the violent escalation.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — An early morning shooting incident involving multiple people have left one dead and another injured on Thursday in South Austin.

The incident occurred at around 4:50 a.m. in the 1800 block of Grove Boulevard, officer Nathan Blake told reporters near the crime scene during a press conference. By the time police arrived, he said, one person was dead in one of the vehicles involved and another person was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained.

However, some of those involved in the shooting had fled the scene by the time police arrived, Blake said. Details were sketchy, but witnesses described a dark blue or black mid-sedan car as having been at the scene with some of those involved in the disturbance.

The shooting occurred at an apartment complex, but it's unclear if those involved live there or just ended up at the scene. A vehicle crash is believed to have preceded the shooting, but what led up to the gunfire is unknown at this time, Blake said.

Given the timing of the shooting, police were on scene opening up areas of closed-off streets to allow access to residents needing to get to work or school, Blake said. The incident is believed to be an isolated case that, while it devolved into a fatal confrontation did not pose an immediate threat to the public, the officer noted.

A police lieutenant said at afternoon press conference that both the deceased man and the injured one are Hispanic males. He said police were on the lookout for that dark mid-sedan which sustained collision damage.
