Update: South Austin Fire Caused by Cigarette

Approximately 30 people have been displaced after 24 units were destroyed.

An overnight fire on the 3000 block of South Lamar Retreat has displaced approximately 30 residents of the Retreat at Barton Creek Apartment Complex.

The two-alarm fire damaged building 21 of the complex, causing 24 units of the three-story building to suffer fire or fire control damage, according to a tweet sent by the Austin Fire Department. There were no injuries reported in the fire, but the 30 people displaced were treated by the Red Cross and apartment management.

Fire officials have determined that the fire was accidental. The fire started when a cigarette was improperly disposed and ignited wood on a second floor balcony before spreading throughout the rest of the building, the Austin Fire Department tweeted.
