Jealousy May Have Led South Austin Woman To Run Over Victim

Victim was confronted with accusations about hitting on another woman's boyfriend before being run over by enraged girlfriend.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — A woman facing an assault charge after running over her victim may have been motivated by jealousy, according to an arrest affidavit filed Wednesday.

According to a report in the Austin American-Statesman, police on Oct. 17 responded to Donahue Lane in Southeast Austin amid reports of a woman yelling for help outside her home. The woman was found lying on a driveway with torn clothing, tire marks on her body and blood emanating from her mouth, according to the affidavit referenced in the report.

The woman was transported to St. David's South Austin Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to Austin-Travis County EMS medics. She was suffering from internal bleeding, a fractured pelvis, broken ribs and other scrapes and cuts, according to the news report.

The victim told police another woman later identified as Meranda Vargas, 18, was upset as she suspected the victim had hit on her boyfriend, according to the affidavit. The suspect's boyfriend is also accused of having assaulted the victim, allegedly hitting her twice across the face.

"You better move or I'm gonna run you over!" Vargas is said to have shouted at the victim, unable to physically move given her condition. The victim subsequently was able to identify her assailant when police showed her a driver's license photo.

Vargas now faces a felony charge of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle.
