Latest Rock-Throwing Occurs Near St. Ed's

More than 50 rock-throwing incidents targeting motorists in a case that's still unsolved.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- The latest incident in an unsolved rash of rock-throwings targeting motorists happened Sunday near St. Edward’s University.

The latest rock throwing occurred at about 2 a.m. this past Sunday on the 2700 block of Interstate 35 near the campus, according to a report on KVUE-TV. No injuries were reported.

To date, there have been more than 50 similar rock hurlings since June 2014 throughout Austin, all occurring between midnight and 5 a.m. Since that time, projectiles have been thrown from the upper deck of I-35, between Braker Lane and Riverside Drive.

No suspects have been identified despite the existence of three $1,000 rewards being offered for any information that could lead to an arrest.

Police said one protective measure being considered is installation of barriers preventing rocks from being hurled. Members of the APD are planning to meet in the coming days with Texas Department of Transportation to discuss that safeguard.

Last Sunday, two such rock-throwing incidents happened within minutes of each other, one of which resulted in slight injuries.

A family traveling by cab to get to home from the airport sustained minor injuries when a rock came through the window. That rock-throwing occurred last Sunday at about 12:30 a.m. on I-35 near the Braker Lane overpass.

About 15 minutes later, police responded to I-35 near Cesar Chavez Street after a rock or piece of concrete was thrown through the windshield of another vehicle.

Police urge anybody who is victimized by a rock throwing to immediately call 911.
