Local Man Collects $2 Million Powerball Prize

He bought his winning ticket at a southwest Austin convenience store.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- Austin has a new millionaire, thanks to his winning Powerball ticket.

Texas Lottery officials said Hector J. Tello matched five of six numbers in the drawing that took place Jan. 9. He won $2 million as a result.

It wasn’t the drawing for the massive $1.6 billion jackpot from which multi-state Powerball fever ensued recently, but the one preceding it on Jan. 9 for $900 million that helped spark the mania.

Tello matched each of the numbers except for the Powerball itself. But he paid an extra dollar on his purchase for the so-called “power play” feature, increasing the size of his prize.

The man bought the winning ticket at the Valero Corner Store at Brush Country Road in Southwest Austin, close to Mopac Boulevard.
