Man Dies In South Austin After Driver Crashes Into Utility Pole

The slick roads caused by light rain may have been a factor leading to the tragedy, police say.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- A young man is dead after crashing into a utility pole overnight.

The man died at the scene when police say the driver of the vehicle he was riding in hit an electric utility pole at the 5100 block of Ponciana Dr., north of Stassney Lane near the Josephine Houston Elementary School.

Austin-Travis County EMS officials estimated the man to have been in his 20s. They received a call to provide medical aid at around midnight on Wednesday.

The slick roads due to continuous light rain that started Tuesday could have contributed to the crash, police told KXAN-TV.

The driver of the vehicle, another man of about the same age, was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge for treatment of injuries not expected to be life-threatening.
