Multi-Vehicle Wreck Involving School Bus Reported In South Austin

Wreck along Highway 290 leaves 2 seriously hurt, one with life-threatening injuries, and prompts closure of Ben White Boulevard eastbound.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — A multi-vehicle collision involving a school bus left two crash victims seriously injured Tuesday afternoon, including one patient sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred just past 5 p.m. along 4900 block of W. U.S. Highway 290 eastbound, police said, and has prompted the closure of all eastbound lanes of Ben White Boulevard and the highway entrance ramp. Austin-Travis County EMS medics reported via Twitter that no students were inside the school bus at the time of the incident.

A man in his 60s sustained serious injuries, medics said. Another victim, a man in his 20s, was reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries before being transferred to St. David's South Austin Medical Center. The bus driver sustained minor injuries, according to Austin ISD officials, who tweeted out a photo of the damaged school bus.

Road closures in the area in the wreck's aftermath have created congestion at the site, and cleanup is expected to take a considerable amount of time. Motorists are urged to avoid the area in reaching their destinations.
