Police Arrest Woman After South Austin Bank Robbery (Updated)

Incident occurred Friday morning when a woman armed with a handgun entered the branch and left with cash.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday arrested a woman accused of having entered a bank branch with a weapon while demanding money, officials said.

The incident occurred Oct. 13 at around 9:20 a.m. at the Chase Bank branch at 701 E. Stassney Lane. A woman displayed a black handgun after entering the building, demanded money and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

On Monday (Oct. 16), police identified the woman as Stephanie Benavides, 23. A booking photo (above) of the woman was released after her arrest.

Police said a witness followed the suspect while calling 9-1-1, leading to an apprehension without incident. Both the weapon and money were recovered, police said. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Austin police said they would be filing robbery charges while they continue their investigation.
