Police ID Bicyclist Killed In South Austin After Being Struck By Car
Police say Frank Machacek, 47, failed to yield right of way on his bicycle, but the driver that hit him was subsequently arrested for DWI,

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday identified the bicyclist who was struck and killed by a car on Tuesday, and released more details as to what caused the collision.
Frank Machacek, 47, was killed while attempting to cross the 1800 block of South 1st Street, from east to west, on his bicycle while a Subaru Forester was traveling southbound at about 7:25 p.m. on March 28. Police said the bicyclist emerged from an alley on the east side of the roadway.
Police said the bicyclist failed to yield the right of way, crossed the northbound lanes and continued as he rode in front of the vehicle. Police noted the driver of the Subaru stopped and remained at the scene after hitting the bicyclist, but was later arrested for DWI once police arrived and tested for intoxication.

Police didn't release the name of the driver. Machacek was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case is still being investigted. Police urge anyone with information regarding this incident to call police at (512) 974-5576. Those with information also can submit tips by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.
The incident marked Austin’s 17th fatal traffic crash of 2017. At this time in 2016, there were 15 fatal traffic crashes and 15 traffic fatalities, police said.
