Police ID Pedestrian Killed In South Austin

Rosbel Tamez, 64, was crossing Riverside Drive just before midnight on Feb. 21 when he was hit by a car and later died at the hospital.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police on Tuesday released details related to a pedestrian death in South Austin that occurred last week.

The incident on Thursday, Feb. 21, occurred along the 7300 block of East Riverside Drive just before midnight. According to a preliminary police investigation, a silver 2017 Jeep Patriot was traveling eastbound along the roadway as pedestrian Rosbel Tamez, 64, was crossing Riverside Drive near Uphill Street when he was struck.

Tamez was rushed to St. David's South Austin Hospital where he died a short time later, police said.

As police continue to investigate, they ask anyone with information regarding this case to call detectives at (512) 974-5594. Those with information also can submit tips by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.

The incident marked the city's ninth fatal traffic crash of 2019, resulting in nine fatalities this year, police noted. At this time in 2018, there were nine fatal traffic crashes and ten traffic fatalities, law enforcement officials added.
