Police ID Pedestrian Struck, Killed In South Austin Collision

Devon Reed Gerald, 23, was crossing West Slaughter Lane against a green light when he was hit, dying later at a hospital.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday identified the pedestrian who was fatally struck by a car in South Austin last weekend.

According to a police investigation, a Toyota Highlander was traveling east on West Slaughter Lane at around 8:40 p.m. last Saturday upon approach to Southpark Meadows Drive with a green light. Devon Reed Gerald, 23, was crossing against the traffic light when he was struck by the vehicle.

Gerald was rushed to St. David's South Austin Medical Center where he died an hour after he was hit by the car. The driver stayed at the scene, and cooperated with police. The investigation continues, and police ask for anyone with information to contact them by calling (512) 974-5576.

Police said Gerald was the 10th person to die on Austin roadways this year. At the comparable period in 2017, seven traffic deaths in an equal number of collisions were recorded, police noted.
