Austin Police ID Woman Stabbed To Death By Stepson For Gloating Over Cowboys' Win

Police have charged Pontrey O'Neal Jones, 20, with stabbing stepmom Magdalena Ruiz, 35, multiple times.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police have released the name of a stabbing victim who was killed by her stepson over reportedly gloating over a Dallas Cowboys game victory last weekend in South Austin.

Magdalena Ruiz, 35, was stabbed multiple times in a South Austin apartment at 2713 S. Congress Ave. on Dec. 18. Upon arrival, police observed multiple stab wounds to the woman's chest. She was rushed to South Austin Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Pontrey O'Neal Jones, 20, has been charged in the attack.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 10:40 p.m. Ruiz and her husband, Pontrey Simon had been sitting on the couch watching television together while the younger Jones also was in close proximity to them. With no explanation, the younger Jones lunged from behind the couch as he stabbed his stepmother multiple times, police allege.

The young man then fled the apartment, but was located some ten minutes later lying naked in the grass along the 2400 block of South Congress Avenue early the next morning.

After an autopsy by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Ruiz's death a homicide, the young man was arrested and charged with murder, a first degree felony. His is behind bars for the attack under a bond of $500,000.

Police later told media outlets that the man became angry after Ruiz began gloating that the Cowboys had won the game they had been watching together. The woman was celebrating the Cowboys' 26-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday night before she was stabbed, police said.

Family members have since disclosed to some media outlets that the younger Jones is bipolar and doesn't always take his medication.
