Police Reverse Course: Death Of Infant In South Austin No Longer 'Suspicious' (Updated)
The three-week-old child at 6600 Elm Creek Drive initially found unresponsive died 45 minutes later despite efforts to save him, police said

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police reversed course on Monday, saying the death of an infant they initially labeled as "suspicious" was likely caused by an accident.
The Austin American-Statesman reports that police are now investigating the incident that occurred Saturday morning along the 6600 block of Elm Creek Drive as an accident. Police went to the home after an emergency call and found the unresponsive three-week-old infant, who died despite efforts to revive him.
Initially, police said the child's death was being viewed as "suspicious" given that several previous disturbance calls to law enforcement were made from the home. The newspaper reported on Monday that the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services had previously investigated the family, but not in connection to the infant.

Police received the emergency call at 10:20 a.m. from a home at 6600 block of Elm Creek Drive, a police spokeswoman told reporters at a subsequent press briefing. Along with members of the Austin Police Department, EMS medics and firefighters arrived at the scene, the police spokeswoman noted.
Despite efforts to save the child, described as a three-week-old Hispanic boy, he died around 45 minutes after emergency crews' arrival, the official said. While the cause of death is unknown, police are treating the death as suspicious given that several disturbance calls were made the prior night to police from the same residence, the police officer said.
The officer did not indicate if the child had outward signs of trauma, saying only that the infant was found unresponsive. Detectives are currently on scene conducting their investigation into the child's death.
