Police Make Arrest in South Austin Bank Robbery Case

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police have arrested a suspect in a South Austin bank robbery during which employees of the business and customers were restrained under threat of a firearm, officials said.

On Monday at around 10:35 a.m, police were dispatched to 133 E. Ben White Blvd. after a suspect reportedly entered the Capital Credit Union branch with an assault rifle. The suspect is said to have restrained bank employees and customers before fleeing the scene in a black vehicle with an undetermined amount of cash.

A subsequent investigation led police to the Griffis SouthparkApartments at 8515 Interstate 35, where a SWAT team descended to the scene. Three individuals were detained and questioned by police and agents with the FBI, resulting in the arrest of Martin Anthony Castillo, 18.

After securing a search warrant for Castillo's apartment and vehicle, police found cash, clothing and a weapon all believed to be connected to the robbery. Castillo was booked into the Travis County Jail and has been charged with the federal crime of bank robbery. A booking photo was not released given the pending nature of the investigation.
