Police Release More Details On South Austin Driver's Homicide

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Monday released more details related to a case where a woman shot and ran over a man during a confrontation last week in South Austin.

The incident dates to Thursday, June 21, just before 3:10 p.m. at Huntwick Drive at East Oltorf Street. Police dispatchers received a call about a man struck by a car, with callers reporting that the driver of a maroon Lexus had fled the scene after striking a man. Other callers reported hearing a gunshot.

Austin-Travis County EMS medics arrived at the scene to treat Jason Dean Aranda, 30, for injuries that resulted in obvious trauma to his body, according to a police account. Despite attempts to save his life, Aranda died at 3:2o p.m., police said.

Detectives learned that Aranda had been in an earlier confrontation with his ex-girlfriend and Cierra Powell. Afterwards, he left the scene of the argument and drove onto Huntwick Drive, police said. Hie ex-girlfriend behind the wheel of a black vehicle, and Powell, driving the Lexus, followed Aranda, police said.

Aranda then came to a stop at the intersection of East Oltorf and Huntwick Drive, exiting his vehicle. The ex-girlfriend drove around him before turning onto East Oltorf, police added. For her part, Powell drove toward Aranda before allegedly striking him with her vehicle, according to police. After striking him, Powell then shot Aranda and drove away, police said.

Aranda's death has been ruled a homicide. Powell was booked into Travis County Jail with a bail set at $150,000, according to records.
