Police Make Arrest In South Austin Bank Robbery [UPDATE]

David White, 20, is said to have robbed two bank branches on Wednesday morning, leaving with an undetermined amount of cash each time.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- Police have made an arrest related to a pair of bank robberies earlier this week.

In a Thursday afternoon press release, police said they executed the arrest the previous day. The suspect was identified as David White, 20.

Police released surveillance footage images following the heist on Wednesday at a Wells Fargo bank branch at 500 E. Ben White Blvd. There, they said White fled with an undetermined amount of cash from a teller while displaying no weapons.

Police later said Whita also was a suspect in another bank robbery taking place the same day at a Capital One bank branch at 301 W. Slaughter Lane.

White was arrested by the Austin Police Department's Region 4 Metro Tactical Unit on South Congress Avenue, police said. The APD forensic unit was able to link the suspect to the bank robberies through physical evidence, police added.

Austin police later told the Austin American-Statesman after the arrest that the suspect is a homeless man from Colorado.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- Police have released images of a suspect who they say held up a local Wells Fargo bank branch Wednesday morning in South Austin.

The alleged heist on March 2 took place at about 10:21 a.m., police said. A male suspect entered the bank branch at 500 E. Ben White Blvd., and demanded money from a teller.

The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. No weapon was displayed, and no injuries were reported.

Police described the suspect as a white male between the ages of 20 to 25, standing at about six feet. He has red hair, a thin build and freckles around the eyes. He was last seen wearing a short-sleeved shirt with a small, white logo on it; dark-colored shorts; and a black baseball cap.

The case remains under investigation. Police ask anyone who might recognize the suspect or have any information about the incident to call robbery tip line at (512) 974-5092, Crime Stoppers at (512) 472-TIPS or text β€œTip 103” and then your message to CRIMES.

Those with information leading to an arrest are eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 if the tip leads to an arrest or charges being filed.

The bank robbery represents the third in Austin in quick succession so far this year, police noted.
