Police Seek Information Related To I-35 Pipe-Throwing Incident

But they note the incident is unrelated to the string of unsolved rock launches targeting motorists.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- The Austin Police Department is seeking the public’s help in locating a motorist whose car was hit by a section of pipe thrown from an upper deck portion of Interstate 35.

The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. on Monday at the intersection of South I-35 and William Cannon Drive. Witnesses observed a man walking along the street bridge from the north side of the overpass throwing the piece of pipe at traffic below.

Based on those eyewitness accounts, police were able to detain a potential suspect.

But police would still like to speak to the motorist whose car was damaged as they continue to investigate the case.

Police noted they are investigating the matter as an isolated incident rather than related to the string of rock launches that have taken place since 2014. The APD has been unable to solve the rock-throwing incidents that began in June 2014.

Members of the public who might have information on the incident are asked to call APD Region 4 detectives at (512) 974-8218 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. They ask callers reference APD Case No. 16-0251097.
