Potentially Contaminated Burger Patties Recalled

Sam's Choice meat could contain wood fragments, company officials say.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- Huisken Meat Co. is recalling nearly 90,000 pounds of beef after wood fragments were found in the onions used in making burger patties.

The company is recalling 89,568 pounds of its Sam’s Choice Black Angus Vidalia Onion Patties product resulting from the contamination, according to a Fox 7 report. Company officials said wood material may have gotten into the onions during production.

The company said the contamination was immediately reported to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service. The product was distributed to stores in 14 states, including Texas.

The recall is of a Class II variety, meaning there’s a “...remote probability of adverse health consequences from eating the food.” No injuries or illness has been reported as a result of consuming the product.

Still, retailers have removed unsold product from both their warehouses and store shelves.

The item was sold as frozen patties in quantities of six, encased with cardboard packacking with the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) number 078742028989. Recalled products are labeled “Best if used by 5/17/16” or “Best if used by 6/11/16.”
