City To Hold Public Meeting on South Lamar Flooding

City officials say development is putting the South Lamar area at risk of increased flooding.

The City of Austin is holding a public meeting on Thursday, Sept. 3, to address flooding in the South Lamar area.

“At this meeting, Watershed Protection staff will discuss a project to help with flooding in the South Lamar area. This project is meant to provide short-term relief while the City of Austin plans watershed-wide solutions to flooding in the West Boulding watershed. These solutions are part of the South Lamar Neighborhood Mitigation Plan,” according to the city’s website.

Several businesses were impacted by the Memorial Day weekend storms. In March, city officials adopted new interim development regulations for the South Lamar area “to address drainage issues associated with infill development.”

“The South Lamar neighborhood area has experienced flooding due to recent increases in residential development, coupled with undersized, collapsed and nonexistent stormwater infrastructure. The ordinance, which was adopted by the City Council in December, 2014, will ensure greater compliance with state law and protect the health, safety and welfare of South Lamar residents by limiting development that will further overburden existing stormater infrastructure,” according to the city’s website.

The South Lamar Neighborhood Migitation Plan applies to the area bounded by Oltorf to the north, Union Pacific railroad to the east, Hwy. 290/Ben White to the south, and South Lamar/Manchaca to the west.
