Hours-Long SWAT South Austin Standoff Ends With Arrest (Updated)

Police sought to serve a warrant on suspect near South Lamar Drafthouse theater before suspect holed himself up in an apartment.

UPDATE: An hours-long standoff with a suspect in South Austin ended Tuesday evening with an arrest, police said.

The incident occurred at the Lamar Union Square Apartments at 1100 S. Lamar Boulevard when police attempted to serve a warrant on an unidentified person for reasons that were also undisclosed. Police initially arrived at the scene at around 2:20 p.m. before the standoff ended just past 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, according to reports.

During the impasse, police blocked all traffic access to the nearby area, and directed nearby residents to stay indoors. The man was not believed to have been armed, according to reports, but safety precautions were taken given an alleged violent history.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — A police SWAT team has descended at an apartment complex near the South Lamar Drafthouse movie theater, blocking traffic access in the area and prompting a stay-in-place order for surrounding residents.

The incident is at the Lamar Union Square Apartments at 1100 S. Lamar Boulevard, where police are at an impasse with a person on whom they serving a warrant, officials said via Twitter. The area of the incident is along South Lamar Boulevard from Lamar Square Drive to Treadwell Street, police said.

Police arrived at around 2:20 p.m., but the incident is ongoing. No injuries have been reported, but police urge people to avoid the area. Those living or working in the midst of the SWAT incident are being urged to stay indoors.
