South Austin Family Hands Over 63 Cats They Can't Take Care Of Anymore
This means there's an even more urgent need for people willing to adopt a cat or kitten, of which there is now an overabundance.
SOUTH AUSTIN, TX -- The need for people wishing to adopt a cat has grown exponentially after a well-meaning South Austin family was forced to turn over 63 felines after being evicted from their home.
“Although this family started with good intentions, it was clear the cats’ owner was overwhelmed and unable to properly care for such a large number of animals.” Mark Sloat, field services program manager at the Austin Animal Shelter told KXAN after the family handed over the cats this past Friday.
Veterinarians discovered that none of the animals had been vaccinated or sterilized, which resulted in a large number of kittens being taken in. Vets are now examining each cat to determine the level of medical attention they require.

As a result of the sizable intake, more than 200 older cats and kittens at the center need to be moved out or fostered. The arrival of the cats only adds to an already urgent need for adopters, officials said.
"All of our shelters are extremely full and we need the city’s support," chief animal services officer Tawny Hammond told the news station. "We can only help each other if you adopt."
