South Austin Man Arrested For Firing Shots Into Air Trying To Silence New Year's Day Revelers

'People have to work,' Shawn Smith, 40, told neighbors before firing two shots into the air to express his displeasure at their fireworks.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — A South Austin man was arrested for firing a gun into the air in an attempt to silence his neighbors' New Year's Day festivities, according to a published report.

Shawn Smith, 40, was arrested for the offense for which he was still in custody as of Monday afternoon, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Police responded to a call of shots fired near the intersection of Gold Moss Cove and Windrift Way at around 1 a.m. on Sunday, the newspaper reported.

According to the report, Smith shot his gun off skyward yet in the direction of the revelers, firing off two shots before walking away. One witness told police the upset neighbor said "...people have to work" during his gunplay, which prompted those celebrating the new year to hide behind cars or scurry inside their homes, the newspaper cited an affidavit in reporting the details.
