South Austin Residents: Sign Up For Free Red Cross Fire Alarm

Incidents of house fires spike up as weather gets colder and people try to heat their homes, prompting free alarm giveaway to save lives.

AUSTIN, TX — Red Cross crew members have mobilized again this holiday season to distribute free smoke alarms for households in need of them.

The organization's "Home Fire Campaign" aims to install smoke alarms for free in those homes lacking them during a part of the year when residential fires become more common as families attempt to heat their homes.

"We know that a working smoke alarm cuts the risk of dying in a home fire in half," Red Cross officials write on their website. "The American Red Cross is happy to provide you with FREE smoke alarms, there are no questions asked and no fees – just a free smoke alarm!"

Like holiday elves but charged with a life-saving mission, Red Cross volunteers will be making visits to residents who sign up to receive free smoke alarms this winter. Upon visiting homes, volunteers work with families in installing the alarms, providing fire safety tips and create fire escape plans to ensure residents' safety.

After signing up, residents receive an email confirmation from a volunteer to gauge a time frame as to when volunteers might visit. To receive a free smoke alarm, fill out the Red Cross form by clicking here. Those with additional questions n the program can call (512) 928-4271.
