South Austin School Evacuated Amid Gas Odor Reports (Updated)

Medics rushing to Paredes Middle School, 10100 S Mary Moore Searight Dr​. transport child sickened by fumes to the hospital.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Emergency personnel rushed to Paredes Middle School on Tuesday afternoon amid reports of a gas odor, prompting the evacuation of the school.

Austin-Travis County EMS officials said via Twitter they received the call at around 1:15 p.m. According to medics, 15 patients are being evaluated as a result of the odor.The school is located at 10100 S Mary Moore Searight Dr.

In what turned out to be a penultimate update at But by 2:41 p.m., medics downgraded the reports considerably. After reporting the number of patients being assessed as having grown from three to 15, medics issued their final tweet on the incident conveying that just one person was evaluated before refusing further medical treatment.

But by around 4 p.m., in what was termed a "final update," medics revised the aftermath by conveying they evaluated one female pediatric patient and transported her to the Dell Children's Medical Center for further treatment.

According to information found on the Austin ISD website, Paredes has a student population of some 875 students. A former Austin ISD trustee told Patch the majority of pupils at Paredes Middle School are minority students, with more than 90 percent majority categorized as Economically-Disadvantaged.
