Texas Department Officials Unveil South-To-North Turnaround Bridge

Part of the Interstate 35 at Slaughter Creek overpass project aims to to improve mobility, safety and connectivity along Interstate 35.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — A newly constructed southbound to northbound turnaround bridge was unveiled at the Slaughter Creek overpass on Wednesday.

As part of the Interstate 35 at Slaughter Creek overpass project, the work is part of ongoing efforts to improve mobility, safety and connectivity along I-35 through the capital area, officials said. The project was unveiled at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

The I-35 at Slaughter Creek overpass project replaces the Slaughter Creek overpass with a new, wider bridge and constructing a new southbound to northbound U-turn bridge. In addition, the project includes widening the southbound I-35 frontage road to two lanes through the Slaughter Creek intersection and installing safety lighting from Slaughter Lane to Onion Creek Parkway.

Construction of the $9.2 million project is funded by voter-approved Proposition 1. Proposition 1, which dedicates a portion of oil and gas tax revenue to the state highway fund, was approved in November 2014 by Texas voters. The contractor for the project is Capital Excavation Company. The I-35 Slaughter Creek overpass project is expected to be complete by the end of the month, weather permitting.
