Two Charged After Car Collides With Group Of Cyclists In South Austin

Devin Donnel Rodriguez, 25, stated at scene while acknowledging dozing off while companion fled in car of a man who'd stopped to help.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX β€” Two people were assessed charges after the car they were in ran into a group of cyclists in South Austin over the weekend.

Devin Donnel Rodriguez, 25, was charged after driving with an invalid license following the incident, according to an arrest affidavit referenced by the Austin American-Statesman. His companion, Amanda Sanchez Flores, 32, fled the scene in a commandeered Jeep Grand Cherokee belonging to a man who had stopped to aid the fallen bicyclists.

Flores later paid dearly for the reflexive move to take off in a car not belonging to her. She was later arrested with auto theft and possession of a controlled substance with a bail set of more than $20,000β€”and more than three time the amount for the driver himself.

This all happened near South Pleasant Valley Road and Elmont Drive early Saturday morning when the driver, Rodriguez, is said to have acknowledged to have fallen asleep at the wheel. By the time police arrived at the scene, they found a debris-filled area covering three city blocks and four people bleeding in the street, the newspaper cited from the affidavit.

The victims were rushed to Dell Seton Medical Center, including one woman said to be experiencing bleeding in the brain, according to the report.

According to Travis County Jail online records, Flores is being held at the Travis County Jail with bail set at $25,000. For his part, Rodriguez is being detained under a $7,500 bail. The invalid license charge appears to be not the first time for such an accusation, and he also was charged with tampering or fabricating evidence with intent to impair the investigation, online records reveal.
