Woman Arrested After Abandoning Dogs In South Austin

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — A woman has been charged with animal cruelty after her dogs were left abandoned at a Southeast Austin intersection last month, police said.

An arrest was made in the case on Sunday in an incident dating to April 1. According to an arrest affidavit referenced by the Austin American-Statesman, police received a 911 call from a woman at around 10:10 a.m. last month reporting she had seen three dogs dumped near Richardson Lane and Felix Avenue. The woman described the vehicle in which the animals had been transported, telling police the motorist then drove off after leaving the canines there.

The dogs were later found and taken to the Austin Animal Center. A trace of the reported license plate led police to Dawnyale Renee Chandler, a 35-year-old Austin woman, according to the report.

Chandler subsequently was booked into the Travis County Jail on a state felony charge of cruelty to animals, according to jail records. The charge is punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000. A booking photo was unavailable at press time.
