Former Spring ISD Substitute Teacher Arrested

Manuel Gamboa, 35, invited the 17-year-old male student to his home in Harris County after giving the student beer on June 3.

SPRING, TX — A former Spring ISD substitute teacher was arrested and is charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a student and sexual assault.

Manuel Gamboa, 35, was arrested on Jan. 24 after a 17-year old boy accused the former substitute of sexually assaulting him in his home while he was passed out, and recording the assault on his cell phone.

The alleged incident happened on June 3, according to prosecutors.

The boy, who helped Gamboa clean pools and viewed the substitute as a mentor, drank several beers that Gamboa gave to him.

The boy, who was a student at Dekaney High School, told prosectors that he became dizzy and passed out on Gamboa's sofa, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The boy said that when he woke up the next morning,Gamboa was next to him, and that he felt uncomfortable whe urinating, KTRK reported.

When the boy borrowed Gamboa's phone to cal his mother to pick him up, he discovered several videos of Gamboa performing oral sex on him while he was passed out.

Harris County deputies were called and reviewed text messages where Gamboa apologized to the boy for his actions.

Authorities also conducted a forensic exam that found semen and DNA that did not belong to the boy.

Once Spring ISD was notified, Gamboa, who was on a long term assignment at Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, was pulled from the assignment and is no longer allowed to substitute teach in Spring ISD.

Spring ISD relased the following statement:

"Immediately upon notification by Harris County of potential pending charges against Mr. Gamboa, a substitute teacher in the district, he was removed from our substitute pool. The safety of our students is our highest priority. The criminal history and references of job applicants, including those who apply to serve as substitutes, are routinely checked before they are hired."

Gamboa is in the Harris County Jail with his bond set at $80,000.
