Klein Independent School District: Bond Steering Committee Digs Deeper Into District Needs

Community members from the Bond Steering Committee reconvened for two meetings this week to better understand the District’s current and future needs and share their insights through long-range planning. Dr. Eddie Coulson continued facilitating the discussions and guided participants through the long-range planning process.

“We have a longstanding history of excellence and innovation for our students’ education in Klein ISD, and our facilities play a vital role in that,” said Dr. Jenny McGown, Klein ISD Superintendent. “It’s a wonderful experience to work with so many people in our community who are dedicated to exploring the best possible ways to continue this tradition for our students.”

Participants learned about the district’s ongoing facilities assessment and formalized facility review process that included over 100 interviews with principals, department leaders, experienced maintenance and facilities teams, technology consultants, engineers, architects, and contractors.

“As a Klein product myself, I’m delighted to be a part of this process,” said Monica Beardon, parent and community member. “I’m looking forward to making improvements for not only my children but for generations to come.”

During the meetings, committee members discussed how facilities support students’ educational opportunities and pathways, current and future capacity challenges, and aging facilities in the district. Committee members toured Lemm Elementary to learn how this older campus was completely renovated after it sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Harvey. This model of construction to modernize an older facility is both a viable and excellent use of funds. 

The team continues to learn about and prioritize district needs and will report their findings to the school board in 2022.

In 2015, 76 percent of Klein ISD taxpayers approved the 2015 Bond, which is successfully wrapping up with the completion of new campuses, facility renovations, technology additions, and safety and security updates.
