Klein Independent School District: Klein Collins Latin Teams Achieve Success At 68th National Competition

Recently Latin teams from Klein Collins High School competed and achieved overwhelming success in the 68th Junior Classical League National Convention competition. The Klein Collins Latin II team won its 3rd National championship while both the Latin I and Advanced Latin Teams placed among the finals in their respective categories at the competition.

The Latin I team placed 5th while the Advanced Latin team placed 2nd in a very competitive final against teams from Florida and D.C. Four Certamen (Quiz Bowl) teams were present from Texas, consisting of 20 total students, with 10 of whom were from Klein Collins.

“Our students dedicate countless hours during the summer practicing and studying in hopes of winning a national championship,” said Kyle Drugan, Latin Teacher and Coach. “There were times during this summer where it hurt to see how much pressure the students were putting on themselves, so as coaches we kept emphasizing the importance of the journey together and not the end result. Although it was a wonderful feeling when the Latin 2 Texas team won Nationals, I am proudest of the friendships that were formed between all of the Texas players, and I will cherish most of all the fun that we had at the socials and practices on our journey.”

Though practices have been virtual this year, the Latin students have had the opportunity to make lasting connections while also achieving success at the Houston-Area and State competitions. It’s clear to see the Klein Collins Latin Teams have been able to thrive despite the year’s challenges.
