Spring ISD Names Lupita Hinojosa Lone Finalist For Superintendent

Hinojosa, the district's chief of innovation and equity, will start Feb. 1 as the district's first Hispanic woman in the position.

SPRING, TX β€” Spring Independent School District has a new superintendent.

The Spring ISD Board of Directors named Lupita Hinojosa the lone finalist for superintendent at its meeting Thursday night, according to a district news release. Hinojosa, who will start Feb. 1 after the requisite 21-day waiting period, will become the first Hispanic woman to hold the district's top administrative position.

Hinojosa replaces Rodney Watson, who stepped down in January after seven years as superintendent to become the executive director of the Texas Association of School Boards.

"Dr. Hinojosa brings to this role tremendous experience, dedication and heart," Spring ISD Board President Justine Durant said. "She is sharply focused on providing every student what they need to flourish academically, socially and emotionally. She has a proven track record of success as an advocate for students and families, and as a board we know Dr. Hinojosa will take Spring ISD to even greater heights."

Hinojosa joined Spring ISD as its chief of innovation and equity in 2014 after a stint at Houston ISD, where she held several positions. She began her career as a bilingual teacher in the district and also was a principal, assistant superintendent of school choice and a school services support officer.
