📰 News we're reading

1. Nearly 1,000-acre development near Sugar Land moves forward with 2,300 new homes (houstonchronicle.com) — A massive 958-acre Ryehill and Del Webb project in Sugar Land's extraterritorial jurisdiction is moving ahead, bringing about 2,300 new homes just outside city limits. Sugar Land officials are already planning water, wastewater, fire, and EMS support as developable land inside the city dwindles to under 4%, signaling more growth and potential service impacts for nearby neighborhoods.

2. Sugar Land Arts & Music Fest Moves to Sugar Land Town Square, Drops Admission Fee for 2026 (thekatynews.com) — Sugar Land's signature Arts & Music Fest is moving to Sugar Land Town Square in November 2026 and dropping general admission fees, making the three-day event free to attend. Residents can enjoy juried art, live music, and food and wine from Town Square restaurants, while proceeds from sponsors and booth fees will continue funding arts scholarships for local youth.

3. Fort Bend ISD leaders say 3 high schools are 'overutilized' and they have a plan to address it (khou.com) — Fort Bend ISD leaders in Sugar Land are weighing rezoning plans that could shift which high schools many local middle schoolers will attend, especially at crowded Austin, Travis, and Elkins. The proposal would redraw middle school boundaries and realign feeder patterns, potentially affecting about 1,600 students, though officials stress no middle schools are slated for closure.

4. Best Art Festivals Houston – Fall Arts Fests & Craft Fairs in Greater Houston (houstononthecheap.com) — Sugar Land residents can look forward to the free Sugar Land Arts & Music Fest Nov. 6–8 at City Center Blvd., featuring more than 100 juried artists, live music, and a wine garden. The broader guide also highlights other fall art festivals around Greater Houston, from Katy to Galveston, all within an easy drive from Sugar Land.

5. Ex-NFL star Adrian Peterson accuses cops of 'fishing expedition' in last-ditch effort to stymie DWI case days before trial (newsbreak.com) — A DWI case tied to an October 2025 arrest by Sugar Land police is drawing attention as former NFL star Adrian Peterson seeks to suppress key evidence, alleging officers overstepped during a welfare check at a gas station. A hearing on his claims is now set for Oct. 13, when a jury trial had originally been scheduled to begin.
