Fort Bend Chamber To Host The State Of Public Education

The event will be held on March 7 at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce in Sugar Land

SUGAR LAND, TX — The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce’s Education Division will host The State of Public Education on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, 445 Commerce Green Blvd. in Sugar Land.

The State Board of Education (SBOE) sets policies and standards for Texas public schools. The primary responsibilities of the SBOE include:

  • Setting curriculum standards
  • Reviewing and adopting instructional materials
  • Establishing graduation requirements
  • Overseeing the Texas Permanent School Fund
  • Appointing board members to military reservation and special school districts
  • Providing final review of rules proposed by the State Board for Educator Certification
  • Reviewing the commissioner's proposed award of new charter schools, with authority to veto a recommended applicant

Donna Bahorich was named chair of the State Board of Education by Governor Greg Abbott on June 18, 2015 and has been reappointed for a subsequent two year term.

Bahorich was elected to the state board as the District 6 representative in 2012 and 2016.

Bahorich is now a member of the board's Committee on Instruction, which oversees issues such as curriculum standards, instructional materials, innovative courses and career and technical education.

Bahorich was previously a member of the Committee on School Initiatives, including serving as chair of that committee for two years.

This committee oversees agenda items related to State Board for Educator Certification rules, and the appointment of school board members for those districts located on military bases.

The Education Division of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce is under the leadership of Chairman, Jim Rice, Rice & Gardner Consultants.

The Education Division of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce is passionate about building awareness and connections between business sectors, community leaders, and education.

Through keeping its members updated and engaged with current events impacting education on the local and national level, the division hopes to further allow individuals to be invested in education.
