Fort Bend ISD Trustees Host Listening Tour At Quail Valley Middle School

"The Listening Tour is an ideal method of getting information out to parents," said Quail Valley GT Academy parent, Trina Pagura.

SUGAR LAND, TX – The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees hosted the first of four Listening and Literacy Tours of the 2017-18 school year, welcoming more than 50 parents, community members and District staff to Quail Valley Middle School.

The event gave participants an opportunity to meet with Board members, take part in round table discussions and enjoy student artwork and musical performances.

Board President Kristin Tassin welcomed guests and shared a brief history of the Listening and Literacy Tours. (Want to get daily news updates and other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Sugar Land Patch morning newsletter.)

“We started the Listening Tours last year because we wanted to get out of the board room and come into the community to meet with families and community members in the schools,” said Tassin. “We wanted to give the community an opportunity to get to know us, sit with us at round tables, ask questions and create dialogue with us and members of our executive team."

Tassin also spoke of the Board’s Leadership Academy that is being offered to community members for the first time this year. The academy will provide community members, who are looking to become informed leaders and advocates for our schoolchildren, with an in-depth look at FBISD.

“The Leadership Academy will give us an opportunity to fill community members in on what Fort Bend ISD is doing and all of the challenges that public education is facing in Texas and throughout our country,” said Board Member Jim Rice.

Following the welcome, guests joined in the round table discussions. Parents were able to meet with Board members and members of the FBISD executive team to discuss concerns they had regarding Special Education and Gifted/Talented services, attendance boundaries, technology and curriculum.

“The Listening Tour is an ideal method of getting information out to parents,” said Quail Valley GT Academy parent, Trina Pagura. “I think the school setting, which is more of a relaxed atmosphere, helps parents feel more comfortable in speaking with Board members.”

The FBISD Board of Trustees thanks all of the individuals who helped make the Listening Tour a success, including the many student participants – Quail Valley Middle School Honor Choir, student artists and pledge leaders Tomi Faseyiku, Yemi Faseyiku, Mayank Kumar and Aimee Pagura; Quail Valley Elementary student artists; Elkins High School Air Force JROTC and student artists; and Clements High School student Destiny Young.
