Katy ISD blocks off six no homework family nights on the 2017-2018 school calendar

KATY, TX — The Katy Independent School District has blocked off six nights on their 2017-2018 school calendar that will be homework-free nights.

The nights, which are deemed family nights, are designed to encourage family bonding time after school and as a result teachers will not assigned homework on those days.

Katy ISD is not the first to consider such a policy.

At the start of the 2016-2017 school year, Brandy Young, a second grade teacher in Godley, Texas handed out a letter to parents who visited her classroom on parent night.

The letter explained that she would not assign homework to her students, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Officials said parents who’d heard of the policy in Godley appealed to district leaders to consider a similar policy in Katy ISD.

A similar policy of no homework is being considered at other school districts in the US, the Chronicle reported.
