Katy ISD Trustees Select Legacy Stadium For Sports Venue Name

Field named for hometown legacy Mike Johnston, who coached Katy ISD football teams in 1990s, early 2000s.

KATY, TX -- The Katy ISD Board of Trustees voted overwhelmingly to name the new district stadium Legacy Stadium, and the field after beloved Katy ISD football coach Mike Johnston.

Johnston who coached championship caliber teams in Katy ISD in the 1990s and early 2000s, said having the field named after him was an honor.

The board voted 7-0 Monday on the name of the stadium, which is reflective of the district mission statement: Be The Legacy.

The stadium, which cost $58 million to build, will open this fall and will be part of the Academy Sports & Outdoors Complex, which will host district-wide athletics, fine arts and extracurricular activities, as well as non-Katy ISD events at the local and regional level.

The 10-year, $2.5 million naming rights agreement will take effect on July 1.
