Katy Woman Ends 35-Year Run Of Volunteer Work At The Age of 93

Avedele Short and her husband helped charter the volunteer group at the Katy Community Hospital.

KATY, TX -- A 93-year old Katy woman who devoted more than three decades of her life to volunteering in her community, will end her run at the Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital campus this year.

Avadele Short remembers the days when Katy was just a little railroad stop with dusty dirt roads where her father was the town blacksmith.

About 35 years ago, Avedele and her husband were looking for something to do, and with the opening of the Katy Community Hospital, they didn’t need to look any farther than their own back yard.

She and her husband helped charter the volunteer group at that hospital and she hasn't stopped helping people since.

Years later, Katy Community Hospital would become Memorial Hermann Katy.

“These days you can't even find somebody who has been employed somewhere for 35 years getting paid to do that much less coming without a paycheck for 35 years,” Heather Rojas, volunteer manager at Memorial Hermann Katy told KPRC.

Recently, Short hit the 10,000 mark for number of volunteer hours served.

She was honored by the hospital and was named one of Katy Magazine's people of the year.

“For a hometown girl who thought she didn't matter, to be recognized in as many ways as I have is unbelievable. It's something I'll carry with me the rest of my life,” Short said.
